September is National Recovery Month

Tumara Jackson • Jul 26, 2024
National recovery month is celebrated in september.

Recovery Month celebrates the gains made by those in recovery from substance use and mental health.

Recovery Month is a national observance held every September to recognize the importance of evidence-based treatment and recovery.

Recovery is personal and has many pathways. People may use multiple paths to recovery.

The following are a few examples:

  • Peer-supported recovery involves the use of structured recovery groups, peer recovery support specialists, recovery housing, collegiate recovery programs, and others to initiate and/or maintain recovery.
  • Treatment-assisted recovery uses professional help from a therapist, a doctor, or another credentialed professional. This can include medication, therapy, or a combination of the two.
  • Faith-based recovery support services are religious or spiritual and can include congregation-based support services that help during recovery.
  • In natural recovery, a person achieves recovery on their own without professional treatment or involvement in a recovery group.

What works for one person may not work for another. It is important to support a person seeking recovery as they decide which pathway is right for them.
